Where we live, the ground is hard and filled with rocks, not the kind of ground in which you can throw a seed and expect it to grow. Work is required.
Where we expect to plant a vegetable garden, we not only had to take out some of that soil, we brought in better soil. Then we planted it with rye grass for the winter in anticipation of tilling that back in while adding more good stuff into it in the spring.
We are cultivating the soil so the seeds and garden can grow. The more attention we give to this process the greater the outcome.
